When trying to post an ERA, I receive an error message to add secondary insurance for the patient. The patient does not have secondary insurance. What do I do?
You are receiving this error message because insurance processed the claim as secondary but there is no secondary insurance in the patient's Insurance Profile. Even if the patient does not think they have secondary insurance, this insurance knows they are secondary and processed the claim as such. This will be indicated on the ERA preview as part of the Claim Status: 2 - Processed As Secondary.
Perhaps the ERA is from an HSA or Consumer Spending Account, or perhaps the patient needs to update their Coordination of Benefits with that insurance company. This will also sometimes be listed in the Adjustment Reason Codes and Remark Codes on the ERA:
Regardless of the reason, insurance has processed the claim as secondary because they recognize themselves as the patient's secondary insurance. Use the following steps to post the ERA:
1. Add a secondary insurance to the patient's Insurance Profile (you can even create a payer named Health Savings Account in your Private Insurance list if it is an HSA)
2. Open the claim and update the Insurance Profile within the claim to the new, Active profile that contains the secondary insurance you just added (making sure the Billed amount on the claim does not change)
3. Post the ERA
